In addition to my day job as a programmer, I am ABD towards a PhD in maritime history from Memorial University of Newfoundland (St. John’s, NL). My thesis topic is ‘Mapping American Commerce’, that examines American international commerce between the Civil War and World War One. My methodology includes typing in large amounts of data and visualizing trends in trade connections and ship ownership with an interactive GIS web application. While I am not ready to share much of my research at this time, I am hopeful that participating in a THATCamp will provide ideas and inspiration to move the project along.
